Catastrophe, by Max Hastings

I really enjoyed this overview of all the events of 1914. Balanced, detailed and readable, it’s an excellent introduction to World War 1. The book concentrates mostly on the Western Front, with diversions into other areas, notably Serbia and the Eastern Front. The author goes into the politics, the strategies, the characters and the madness of it all. Recommended.
